My son greeted me with a Garter Snake today. He found some Garters in a hollow log near our house. In the years that I have lived in Utah, I don't remember temperatures allowing for herping this late in the season. I took some pictures of the snake and told him to release it where he found it so that it can hibernate somewhere other than in our house. The snakes that I already have are enough work for me. Garter Snakes and other Diurnal snakes have huge eyes and very good vision.

How do you get the snakes to pose for you?
To photo snakes, first calm them down by holding them (except venomous). Then find a good background for them that isn't too hot or cold. Take a lot of pictures and you will usually have some turn out.
One of these times you kids are going to bring a poisonous one home. I forgot, do you guys have some snakes as pets? I would be interested in seeing them.
My kids know how to identify snakes and have been taught not to pick up anything they aren't sure of. This past summer, my son found a Great Basin Rattlesnake hatchling and knew what it was immediately and gave the snake plenty of space. I am the only one you should worry about.

My boys and I found a little guy like this today! Hope you don't mind that I saved your photo because they asked me to print a picture of "our" snake and I hadn't taken any. This snake looks very similar so they're happy boys. I definitely would have expected him to be settling in for winter but I'm glad he hadn't yet because they really got a kick out of seeing him.
